I guess for elders, you are supposed to go and talk not making them come. lolA lot of westerners use index finger and bring it towards you, that's considered extremely rude. it's like calling a slave or a children who is in trouble. (Using just one finger can be rude in general except pointing at a direction) so don't do that.

I had a summerjob at a factory where I worked with an Iranian guy and he would do that gesture and I thought he was telling me to go my way when he really wanted to talk with me. So maybe that is used in all of Asia

Hi, "kudasai" here means "please", so "chotto matte" can be like "wait a minute" and "chotto matte kudasai" is like "wait a minute, please" ;) JapanesePod101,com

Hi, using gestures itself is considered as rude if you use it to older people; gestures are more for kids and pets. In these days, people use gestures more, but still it's not nice or never polite if you use it to the poeple you should pay respect to. JapanesePod101,com

wait, why shouldn't we do this to elders? i think i'm missing a piece of information :|

Hi! ちょっと is not a girly word, so you can use it without problem or sounding like a girl. こっちにおいで can be also used with this gesture, but please be careful that this expression might give a wrong impression like "treating the other like a kid". Both ちょっと and こっちにおいで are for using to close people, but never to the older people. If you want to avoid sounding girly even a bit, I'd recommend you to say こっち(に)きて instead of こっちにおいで :) JapanesePod101,com

I see..... Is it also rude to a japanese individual if I introduce myslef and shake their hand? I tend to do that with everyone. :/ I know some of them bow to each other and don't look at each others eyes.

Jerry-san, you mean, to wave your hands saying "go away"? If you wave with particularly strong upwards movement, it can mean "go away" and, yes, it's rude. JapanesePod101,com

@japanesepod101 is it rude if you do that gesture the opposite of its primary direction? Or will it have no meaning towards japanese people?
