grocery haul & tips (imported foods Japan) VLOG 輸入食品が買えるおすすめ店

Hey guys! Here is another VLOG from the end of June. I do most- if not all- of the grocery shopping. and as someone who dabs a little in various styles of cooking (Japanese, Western, etc) I am always trying to find different ingredients at their best prices. As some of these import stores can be found across Japan, here are some finds that I always save a yennie on. I also tried some summer treats.

*****Just a disclaimer as well: ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
With regard to the pandemic, if you have not seen in the news already, the response in Japan from its administration has been a bit different than those of other countries: I want to also let my international audience know that, even now, Japan has been taking a mild approach
🚨UPDATE (ONLY FROM APRIL 7th – 7 Prefectures are under a state of emergency NO LOCKDOWN)
so if you see people around, not everyone is wearing masks (they’re sold out anyway), taking trains, going to work, playing in parks, eating in restaurants… that is kind of the situation at that time. At the time of filming, there was no official lockdown.
🚨UPDATE (FROM APRIL 17th the state of emergency has extended to all prefectures) until May 6th as of now.
🚨UPDATE (FROM APRIL 30th the state of emergency has been extended to May 31st) but, prefectures with fewer cases are lifting restrictions.
🚨UPDATE (FROM MAY 14th some prefectures in Japan may lift restrictions) – the exception of the 13 prefectures with the most cases
🚨UPDATE(FROM MAY 21st Hyogo, Osaka and Kyoto have lifted their state of emergency)
🚨UPDATE(FROM MAY 24th Tokyo and the remaining surrounding prefectures (plus Hokkaido) have lifted their state of emergency)
🚨UPDATE (FROM JUNE 1st Tokyo will enter the second phase of opening by allows certain places like gyms and yoga to start their services back up again and restaurants will be able to serve until 10pm)
🚨UPDATE FROM May 23rd- May 31st Fukuoka started experiencing a cluster of infections (48 within 6 days) after having 0 infections for quite a long period of time. They are experiencing a slight second wave.
🚨UPDATE FROM June 2nd Tokyo went on Tokyo Alert due to an uptake of some infections exceeding 20 cases. From June 11th the Tokyo Alert has been taken down and Tokyo will start into Phase 3 of lifting restrictions. Restrictions will only be imposed again if 1. more than 50 cases a day or 2. 50% of the cases are untraceable or 3. the cases double in less than a week.
🚨UPDATE From June 11th, the government has decided they will take measures to allow a travel bubble of 250 travelers a day (mostly business) from Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Vietnam and currently foreign residents that have long term visas, spousal, child dependent, etc are allowed to come back under SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
🚨UPDATE From June 19th, the government has decided to lift restrictions domestically to allow travelers to travel between prefectures within Japan
🚨UPDATE July 9th, Tokyo breaks the daily record of new infections with 224 cases. Government plans to continue easing restrictions allowing events of 1k to 5k people.
🚨UPDATE July 18th about a month after inter-prefectural travel restrictions were lifted, not only Tokyo but multiple cities across Japan are breaking daily number infection counts.
🚨UPDATE FROM July 22nd will start the Go To Campaign in prefectures excluding Tokyo to allow discounted domestic travel in order to boost the economy (fears and criticism of spreading to other prefectures have risen from this).
NO LOCKDOWN was imposed- but properties like hotels are being used for less critical cases

Ohayo! Thanks for another great video. I love lentils, red beans, chickpeas, etc. I recommend buying dry beans instead if you can find them (I have no problem finding them at my local supermarket, here in Seoul). Not only they are cheaper, but also healthier. I understand that the soaking time might be a downside for some, but you can just let them soak overnight. I love making all kinds of delicious soups with them. Cheers!

I tried the mint chocolate mochi last year in Japan and thought it was really good. Mint flavor anything is my favorite lol

Same nightly thing for us, I cook, clean up, get things ready for sleep. When I get more hours in gonna have to make a shared cleaning tasks list 🤭 or pick from a hat.

Do you use the same taco rice recipe as Jenn? I've noticed you prepare something similar-ish (the kidney beans reminded me) but I'm not entirely sure. I'm curious to try it, mostly to see what's considered 'taco-like' for your Canadians (I'm Mexican!) 😂

I love mint chocolate anything! The Meiji chocolates look pretty much like Andes mints, and I'd love to try the mochi, especially with the toothpaste-like comparison lolol.

Finally all caught up watching every. single. video. and just want to reiterate how fun and engaging your channel and IG are. I hope you keep having the motivation (and time!) to create content, because you're really good at it. Have a great week! x

Thanks for all the tips. I'm in Chigasaki and it's really hard to save money and enjoy yourself on the weekend. Living alone it's usually cheaper to just get bentos than to cook for yourself, and easier, especially after teaching third graders all day... But it's not always a healthy option. The prices at different supermarkets vary a lot more than in Australia, so it's something to watch out for.

I think your hair is lovely! Embrace the waves and the colour looks great. If you want a styling produce that will survive the humidity, I highly recommend Eco Krystal gel. It’s very sticky, but I emulsify it in my hand with water or a wet styling product then apply a generous blob to my hair. I wear mine curly now, and when it first drys it’s a little crispy (what you want for curly girl method), then when go scrunch or brush it softens up to a non sticky/soft texture (like normal hair feel). It resists the humidity and heat were I live beautifully, leaving my hair soft and styled , not limp or sticky at all.

Canned green lentils are such a great mince replacer in chilli, spaghetti bolognase, lasagne or cottage pie. Full of protein so the provide great satisfaction too. You should try a cottage pie with sweet potato mash, a good British fave!

Did they send the government money in cash? I heard there was a fair bit of paperwork to get it but it is Japan after all. I’ve been inspired to do the workouts too - a new one came out this morning. I did it and now have spent my day eating as it makes me hungry 😂. I make my own raw chocolate- I sometimes use mint but my favourite is zesting the skin of an orange or mandarin into it. 🍊

I'm not sure if they have them in Canada or Japan, but Frozen Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies are among the best things ever created by humans. I usually find mint flavored things taste too much like toothpaste. The one exception is fresh mint leaves with Lamb.
