Starting to learn Japanese Sign Language (JSL)

[English subs: Press CC]

I’ve decided to take up learning JSL. I’d like to be able to communicate with the deaf Japanese community if I go to Japan again. If anyone is learning JSL, please let me know and we can practice together. I’ve only started learning today, so I really don’t know much more than the very basics.

Can you learn both Japanese and JSL at the same time? I’m currently learn Japanese. Also, I have a heart for the deaf community.

WOW, you're amazing <3 I'm also trying to learn JSL because of Koe no Katachi, but honestly i can't find resources to study. How do you study and where did you find those videos? I've been studying japanese for about 7 years, can that helps me? Thank you so much, 頑張ってね~ ^^

Japanese Sign Language and Korean Sign Language aren't the same so if you want to communicate with your Korean friend in sign language then you'll need to learn Korean Sign Language unless I missed you saying she knows Japanese Sign. Also deaf blind use tactile sign language typically which is an entirely different thing. Good luck on learning! I'm trying my best to learn Japanese Sign and really the best way to learn is to take a class and or get involved in the community. Also, read up on Deaf Culture. There's a great book called Deaf Japan (in English) on the subject. I don't know Japanese so can only read English material. I'm sure there's loads out there in Japanese of course.

in american sign language, a deaf person gives you a sign name. its easier then spelling your name all together. i wonder if in jsl they give you a sign name….

I've been doing JSL for a bit now and you should definitely check out QuizHeartfulPower (指文字クイズ) for some good receptive signing drills.

I have studied American sign language and Have always been curious about death culture in Japan because I never met or saw anyone who used JSL. I finally came across a video online. It looks very different and difficult so good luck.

phew ok I'm gonna stop trying to practice japanese now (critiques welcome)
I've been slowly trying to pick up japanese for a bit now and have just become interested in JSL also…I've been around ASL since I was growing up (mom is an interpreter) so it's been interesting learning signed and spoken at the same time. Though I haven't had much way to practice JSL and other than the dictionary above I haven't found too many good resources so it's falling way behind. I'll definitely be curious for you to find anything else!!

    Anyways good luck!! 💪🏽

I LOVE your channel 🙂 I learnt ASL (American Sign Language) about 2 years ago, sign language is an amazing language and really opens up your mind to the deaf and hard of hearing community! I hope you stick with it, it’s an awesome thing to know ❤️

I definitly think you have to communicate to learn jsl or any sign language properly. Sign language is so much more than some signs you do with your hands – it’s even about your expressions, body language and visual imagine. It will even get you thinking in a different manner because you can’t always translate a speaking language to their respective sign languange word by word. Sometimes you have to use your creativity to explain some things. Good luck to your studies in jsl!
