One of Japan’s most beloved fast foods, oden, a bubbling hot pot of vegetables, tofu and fishcakes can be found everywhere from the most exclusive of restaurants to the ubiquitous konbini (convenience stores). Our first stop is Maruken Suisan a family run oden eatery where the fishcakes are all made in house and where diners lean on communal tables snacking on dashi drenched daikon and fluffy fishcakes whilst sipping on sake.

Order a cup of sake and drink three quarters of it before asking for dashiwari where the staff will top up the rest of your sake cup with oden broth and a sprinkle of shichimi (Japanese spice mix). Savoury, spicy and a warming burn from the sake- it makes for a unique end to your oden feast.

Our next stop is to a local unagi restaurant for a lunch of mouthwatering freshwater eel. Eel is a Japanese obsession and unagi is famous not only for its buttery flesh and beautiful flavour but the belief that it is stamina inducing. We eat a simple unagi-don (eel on rice) set lunch with soup and pickles. It’s perfection!
Where we ate:

Oden at Maruken Suisan, Japan, 〒115-0045 Tokyo, Kita, 赤羽1丁目22−8. Open 10:00am to 9:00pm. Closed 3rd Wednesday of each month.

Unagi at Manmaru Ikebukuro, 2 Chome-13-8 Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tōkyō-to 171-0014, Japan. Open 11:00am to 3:00pm and 5:00pm to 10:30pm. Closed Sunday.

Another brilliant viewing experience. The perfect job. I am very envious of all your gastronomic experiences but someday I will have similar ones. Thank you for the inspiration

I like you openness to liking different foods and re-introducing them to me.  When I was a child, I did not like oden.  But I have a feeling my adult taste buds will like it now.

That opening shot of the unagi atop the rice on the end of your chopsticks is everything 🥢😍 🤤 Did you plan for your top to match the oden bowl Sheena? 😆 I think you guys were a bit tipsy after breakfast… way to go. 🙌🏻 Favourite quote “I’m just gonna pick the whole thing up and pop it in my gob.” – woman after my own heart. 😂 Another great vid guys.

I missed you both Thomas & Sheena. Sumimasen for not commenting for so long. Still missing you. Love Japanese foods because they appreciate the individual distinctive flavours of every ingredients. Even soy sauces and wasabi and radishes could taste so great. And even rice in Japan is great. Have you eaten the thick egg cakes?

Yaaay Oden ohhmyy, I'm so addicted to this dish and everytime I see it my heart beats fast haha. Don't know why but it's the perfection of comfort food to me. But I don't see it that often in food vlogs, maybe it's not that exciting looking like other dishes, hmm. My heart(or stomach;P) sees the real beauty in it haha XD this wasn't just fan-service or viewer-service, it was "only-me-Plejades-service" thank you sooo so much, like all your videos a treasure of amazing sights, lovely charming moderartion as always, and just a complete box full of feel good.

Ohh, and sake mixed with broth sounds deliiicious, like a good start in the day 😉 send you lovely greetings and hope you have a wonderful day ^^/

Hi guys alcohol for breakfast are u sure your not Irish lol. Im not usually an eel fan but it looked incredible. Really great video as usual and looking forward to next one. Hope the sake didnt cause too much of a headache. My problem would be that one is never enough.

Oh my gosh that unagi looks amazing, and i can't wait to try daicon radish in oden when we travel to Japan….yum! I don't drink alcohol often but i will be sampling a few sake on our travels😁 Great video guys!

Great to see oden again. I re-watched an old video and love how Thomas described the daikon as "roast dinner on a Sunday." 😀👍 I read that this resto opens at 10am…that's not too early for sake! 😂 Fun day, guys.

Wow, at 4.35 Sheena's top to bowl coordination couldn't have been better!!! 😉 A jar of Sake for breakfast – lovely start to the day👍 Nice vid as always guys🙂

I'm beginning to think Sheena is a genius in researching!!- you just never see these types of foods on any other show (in most of your videos something is EXTREMELY rare/unique!!) today's example being the fish cakes, etc… in the hot broth… You'll NEVER find that anywhere here in Vancouver, and I've never seen it on any other channel here on YouTube!! THUMBS UP guys!!!!!!
